Q + A
What do you do?
I DJ, manage and own a company called Stumptown DJs.
Why do you work with nonprofit events?
We work at nonprofit events because they are all causes we believe in. It’s events like these that can bring across real change in our society. For example, all of our DJs are very supportive of peoples’ right to marry whomever they want. When an Oregon judge overturned the ban on same-sex marriage last year we were super excited. I contacted Swaim Strategies to let them know we wanted to show our support and would love to help out at a celebration event they were putting together. Another DJ, Andrew Carlson, and I volunteered to play music all day and night at the event that was taking place at the Melody Ballroom. It was great to be part of something so important in Oregon and U.S. history.
What inspires you about a good event?
What inspires me about a good event is the smiles that good music can bring to peoples’ faces. All of our events are celebrations of some kind and it’s almost impossible not to have a good time at any celebration as long as there is good music to listen to.
What is your favorite moment at an event?
My favorite moment at an event is when someone comes up to me and tells me I am doing a great job. When I hear that, I know that my client is happy because most of their guests are having a good time as well. It puts a smile on my face and gives me a great sense of satisfaction that is tough to replicate.
What brings you the most joy in your work?
I really enjoy being part of some of the happiest times in people’s lives. We DJ corporate events, nonprofit events and a whole lot of weddings. All of these gatherings have two things in common: celebration and happiness. With celebration, comes music, and with good music, comes dancing and happiness. I love the feeling of being the one that’s lucky enough to provide that kind of happiness to others.
